Wendy Eriksson

Best known for her whimsical, bright, boat and fish compositions, Wendy creates images with successive layers of mixed media with an interest in spontaneity. Her colorful works are expressive and dramatic with an emphasis on the energy of the painter’s mark. She finds the artistic process exciting as it opens the gates for happy accidents that extend beyond just the materials. She also investigates themes of the Australian Outback as they relate to rural life and an ever changing environment. Works such as the “Flooded Plains” series, with imagery composed of dots, colours, line work and abstract patterning, yield a complex ancient journey. Wendy continues to explore a fascination with life on and under the water.

    Fish Gather

    Acrylic on stretched canvas
    76cm (W) x 51cm (H) x 2cm (D)

I am always delighted by the abundance of life which I encounter when I dive in the waters of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia. As your head dips below the surface a myriad of colour is right before your eyes.

I continue to paint this style of fish painting. If one morsel of food is dropped into the water, the fish all dart to get it. This is one of my fish feeding series of paintings.

  • I Love This Town

    Mixed media on stretched canvas
    35.56cm (W) x 25.4cm (H) x 2cm (D)

This artwork started off life as a painting palette. I often use small canvases as a palette and then work on them to create a finished painting.

This is a study of colour, form and line work which I think resembles a little town. The interpretation is up to the viewer.

Ned Kelly. One of Australia's famous bush rangers. A subject which I have enjoyed painting over the years.

  • Heart Reef, Great Barrier Reef

    60.8cm (W) x 50.7cm (H) x 2cm (D)

Heart Reef is found in Hardy Reef which is part of the Great Barrier Reef off the Whitsunday coast in North Queensland, Australia. It is a very famous icon of the Great Barrier Reef and visited by hundreds of thousands of people.

    Surprisingly it is very small!

I love painting Heart Reef. There are so many ways in which it can be interpreted. This one is executed in a slightly folksy style.

  • Summertime

    Mixed Media on stretched canvas
    50.7cm (W) x 60.8cm (H) x 2cm (D)

This artwork was created in a spontaneous way. I respond to each new layer based on the layer below to produce a floral painting with 'make believe' blooms.

I often paint in this way. Starting with making marks and then responding to them.
